Soldier from 4 RIFLES killed near Sangin on 7 March

It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm the death of a soldier from A Company, 4th Battalion The Rifles (4 RIFLES), part of the 3 RIFLES Battle Group.

The soldier died as a result of small arms fire near Sangin, in Helmand province, during the morning of Sunday 7 March 2010.
The soldier`s death was not connected to Operation MOSHTARAK.
Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, said:
"It is with deep sadness I have to tell you that a British soldier was killed this morning in a fire-fight with insurgents at Patrol Base Bariolai to the north of Sangin district centre.
"The soldier died as a result of gunshot wounds sustained during an insurgent attack on the patrol base involving small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. He was from 4 RIFLES, serving as part of the 3 RIFLES Battle Group.
"He gave his life fighting to protect his friends and to bring security to the people of Sangin; we will remember him."
The soldier`s next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.
